UNAM Names José Narro Robles and Juan Mora Catlett Emeritus Professors

The honors coincide with new rules to tighten university oversight.

Overview

  • The University Council, which met Tuesday, approved emeritus status, a lifetime academic honor, for former rector José Ramón Narro Robles and film educator Juan Roberto Mora Catlett.
  • UNAM cited Narro’s role in building family medicine, including the first department in Mexico and Latin America, a national medical simulation center, and a combined MD–PhD study plan.
  • Mora Catlett was honored for creating UNAM’s first objective-based film curriculum at the film school now called ENAC and for mentoring filmmakers such as Alfonso Cuarón and Emmanuel Lubezki.
  • In the same session, the council changed its planning and evaluation rulebook to expand progress reports, spell out review stages, and enlarge the oversight council that tracks institutional plans.
  • The council also awarded top student medals and advanced a shortlist to replace Mario Luis Fuentes Alcalá on the University Board of Trustees, naming Juan Alberto Adam Siade, José Luis Clavellina Miller, and Martha Angélica León Alvarado.
