UNAM and Instituto Cervantes Launch Latin AmericaCaribbean Spanish Observatory at CEPE

The project aims to strengthen Latin America's voice on Spanish in the AI era.

Overview

  • The initiative, presented in Mexico City by UNAM rector Leonardo Lomelí and Instituto Cervantes director Luis García Montero, appointed Fernando Rodríguez Guerra as academic director.
  • Based at UNAM’s Center for Teaching for Foreigners (CEPE), the observatory will produce systematic studies on education, translation, migration, science and the impact of artificial intelligence and other digital technologies.
  • Organizers said the project joins an international research network and will coordinate with the Instituto Cervantes Global Spanish Observatory’s collaborations in over 100 cities across 50 countries.
  • In its first stage, the team plans to prioritize Spanish teaching for foreign learners and for indigenous communities to address regional gaps.
  • Leaders underscored the region’s central role in the language, citing more than 500 million native speakers worldwide and noting that Latin America accounts for the vast majority.
