UN Warns of Humanitarian Catastrophe in Lebanon as Israel Renews Strikes

Shrinking access now stalls aid to people forced from the south.

Overview

  • Following Friday's renewed airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs and fresh evacuation warnings, UNHCR said the risk of a humanitarian catastrophe in Lebanon is real.
  • Lebanon's Health Ministry reports 1,094 dead and more than 3,000 injured since March 2, with over one million people displaced and about 130,000 staying in roughly 650 crowded shelters.
  • Destruction of key bridges over the Litani River has cut off entire districts, isolating more than 150,000 people and blocking aid convoys from reaching the south.
  • WHO has logged 77 attacks on health workers, 53 deaths, and dozens of facility closures or damage, which has slashed access to basic and emergency care.
  • The UN Flash Appeal for $308 million is only about one-third funded, while Israeli officials' stated plan for a buffer zone up to the Litani River threatens to prolong displacement and delay returns.
