U.N. Says June Was Deadliest Month for Ukrainian Civilians Since April 2022

The report attributes the surge to long-range missile and drone strikes and warns that depleted Ukrainian air-defence stocks leave cities more exposed and could drive higher civilian losses.

Overview

  • The U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported Tuesday that at least 293 civilians were killed and 1,990 injured in June 2026, the highest monthly toll since April 2022.
  • Long-range missiles and drones were the leading cause of June casualties, causing about 45 percent of the toll with 126 people killed and 907 injured and striking urban areas far from the front line.
  • For the first half of 2026 the U.N. documented 1,396 civilians killed and 7,978 injured, a 37 percent rise compared with the same period in 2025.
  • Ukrainian officials say falling stocks of interceptors have left cities vulnerable and are urgently pressing the United States, EU and NATO partners for additional interceptors and permission to expand production of systems such as the Patriot.
  • The U.N. has verified 16,431 civilian deaths since February 2022 but says this is likely an underestimate because it cannot confirm figures in many Russian‑held areas, and the report also notes rising reported civilian deaths inside Russia and repeated hits on energy infrastructure that deepen civilian hardship.
