UN Says About 1.6 Million Syrians Have Returned Home, Few From Germany

UNHCR's tally shows returns concentrated in nearby states facing deep strain.

Overview

  • UNHCR data show roughly 1.6 million people have gone back to Syria since the December 2024 power shift, with about 634,000 from Turkey, 621,000 from Lebanon and 284,000 from Jordan.
  • Returns from Germany remain small in comparison, with the country grouped under “other countries” at about 6,100 people in the UN figures.
  • German officials recorded 3,678 voluntary returns in 2025, even though more than 900,000 Syrians currently live in Germany.
  • Berlin argues many protection grounds may have lapsed and can be checked in revocation reviews, a legal process to withdraw status, though the BAMF now applies it mainly after triggers such as unauthorized Syria trips or crimes.
  • UNHCR says any return must be voluntary, safe and dignified, while researchers note many departures from Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan reflect economic pressure and tough living conditions rather than clear security gains in Syria.
