UN Analysis Projects 1.24 Million in Lebanon Will Face Acute Hunger by August

Renewed fighting is wrecking farms, driving up costs, worsening access to food.

Overview

  • An IPC assessment released Wednesday by Lebanon’s agriculture ministry with FAO and WFP projects 1.24 million people will face Crisis-level or worse food insecurity from April to August 2026.
  • The projection marks a rise from about 874,000 in November through March after the IsraelHezbollah escalation that began March 2 reversed recent gains.
  • Displaced and refugee communities face the highest rates, with 725,000 Lebanese, 362,000 Syrian refugees, and 104,000 Palestinian refugees classified in Crisis or worse.
  • Lebanon’s farm belt has been hit hard, with officials reporting 76% of southern farmers displaced and 22% of agricultural land damaged, which cuts output and income.
  • A ceasefire that started April 17 lowered fire yet access stays tight in border districts, and WFP and FAO warn hunger will deepen without fast support as prices climb and the spring planting window closes.
