UMBC Poll: Maryland Voters Focus on Economy as Moore’s Redistricting Bid Stalls

Senate leaders have excluded a remap from this week’s special session.

Overview

  • A UMBC survey of 801 adults finds 25% name the economy, jobs and cost of living as the top issue, with health care (77%), K–12 education (75%) and public safety (73%) rated highest for state action.
  • Only 27% say mid-cycle redistricting should be a high priority, with many more elevating taxes, spending and other pocketbook concerns.
  • Eighty-one percent view partisan map-drawing as a major problem for American democracy, and 63% prefer using an independent commission over elected officials to draw districts.
  • Marylanders are split on the current congressional lines, with 28% calling them fair, 41% unfair and 29% unsure; 33% say the maps favor Democrats and 8% say they favor Republicans.
  • Gov. Wes Moore formed a commission and called a special session, but legislative leaders say redistricting is off the agenda for now as legal and timing pressures build before the Feb. 24 candidate filing deadline.
