Ulhasnagar Sanitation Worker Killed on Duty After Garbage Dispute, Suspect Arrested

Hours later, the victim's wife died by suicide, police said.

Overview

  • Police identified the deceased as Mahadu Jagtap, 35, a contractual sanitation worker employed by a private firm serving the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation.
  • The stabbing occurred in Section 20 (Camp No. 3), reportedly outside a former corporator’s house, while Jagtap was carrying out routine cleaning.
  • Officers said the attacker stabbed Jagtap multiple times — as many as 32 — and the assault was captured on CCTV.
  • Based on the footage and a preliminary inquiry, police arrested Durgesh Gupta and booked him for murder as the investigation into a garbage-dumping dispute continues.
  • Officials noted Gupta is unemployed and had a prior arrest in an assault case last June; DCP Sachin Gore said action has been taken under Section 103 of the BNS Act.
