Ukrainian Drones Hit Novorossiysk Oil Hubs as Russia Reports Damage at CPC Terminal

The strikes test the resilience of Black Sea routes that carry Kazakh crude equal to about 1.5% of global supply.

Overview

  • Ukrainian forces said their drones struck Novorossiysk’s Sheskharis terminal on Monday, damaging six of seven tanker loading racks and igniting large fires.
  • Russia’s defence ministry said the nearby Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal was also hit, a site that handles about 1.5% of global oil and counts Chevron and ExxonMobil as shareholders.
  • Kazakhstan’s energy ministry said exports were continuing through its main pipelines, with officials still assessing any effect on Black Sea loading operations.
  • Verified videos showed a blaze at the port, the city’s mayor reported drone debris in residential areas, and Russian officials said at least eight people were injured as crews worked to restore power.
  • Ukraine also said it struck the Admiral Makarov warship and a drilling rig near Novorossiysk, in what follows recent attacks on Russian energy sites at Primorsk, Ust-Luga and the NORSI refinery to cut export revenue.
