Ukraine’s Deep Freeze Recedes as Warmer Weather Arrives Wednesday

The state weather service expects temperatures to trend higher for the rest of winter with no renewed sharp cold snaps.

Overview

  • Forecasters say the severe frosts will likely peak one last time overnight on Feb. 10, with lows around −12 to −20°C and down to −22°C in northern areas.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 11, is forecast to be mostly dry under an anticyclone, with a clear warmup that brings daytime readings near −2 to +3°C in the west and south and +1 to +6°C in Zakarpattia.
  • Eastern and northeastern regions remain colder for now, with daytime −2 to −7°C and nighttime −15 to −20°C before a gradual easing.
  • Winds turn predominantly southerly at 7–12 m/s with stronger gusts of 15–20 m/s in the Carpathians, and travel hazards include icy roads, patchy freezing rain or wet snow in the Carpathians and Zakarpattia, and morning fog in Precarpathia.
  • Ukrhydromet forecasts cyclones on Feb. 14–15 bringing mixed snow and rain but not major blizzards or large accumulations, and it does not expect a return to −20°C-level cold this winter.
