Ukraine Warms in West as Freezing Rain and Snow Snarl Roads

Authorities have deployed 926 road machines, with forecasters still warning of severe nighttime frost in the northeast.

Overview

  • Meteorologists report a short-term warmup from February 5 in western and southern regions, while the northeast and east retain severe nighttime lows down to −20…−22°C.
  • Ukrhydromet forecasts snow across many northern, central and Mykolaiv areas, with wet snow, rain and icing in western, Vinnytsia and Odesa regions.
  • Freezing rain has been confirmed in Prykarpattia, creating invisible ice layers and sharply higher braking distances, with bridges and open road sections flagged as most dangerous.
  • The State Agency for Restoration and Development of Infrastructure says 926 machines and 1,119 workers are clearing and treating roads, using 15.5 thousand tonnes of sand-salt mix and 478 tonnes of salt in a day.
  • Southeasterly winds are expected at 7–12 m/s with gusts up to 15–20 m/s in several regions, and drivers are urged to slow down, keep distance, avoid sharp maneuvers and postpone trips if possible.
