Ukraine Says Strikes Hit Russian Aircraft Plants in Ulyanovsk and Novgorod

Kyiv frames the attacks as a move to degrade Russia’s ability to repair and field transport and refueling planes.

Overview

  • Ukraine’s General Staff said the Aviastar plant in Ulyanovsk was struck on March 16, with hangars and aircraft parking areas hit and damage still being assessed.
  • Kyiv also reported a March 17 strike on the 123rd aircraft maintenance plant in Staraya Russa, saying a hangar used for Il-76 and L-410 servicing was hit.
  • Ulyanovsk regional governor Alexey Russkikh reported five drones were intercepted over the region on March 16 and did not acknowledge any damage to the plant.
  • Reuters and the Kyiv Independent said they could not independently verify Kyiv’s claims about the strikes or the extent of any damage.
  • Aviastar, part of United Aircraft Corporation under Rostec, produces Il-76MD-90A transports and Il-78M-90A refuelers and services An-124 cargo aircraft, according to Ukrainian officials.
