Ukraine Says SpaceX Is Working to Curb Russian Use of Starlink-Linked Drones

Kyiv seeks technical fixes that block hostile links without crippling the country’s Starlink lifeline.

Overview

  • Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov says his ministry contacted SpaceX within hours of new reports and submitted proposed remedies, and he credits Elon Musk and Gwynne Shotwell with a rapid response.
  • The Institute for the Study of War reports Russian forces are using satellite links to extend BM-35 drone operations to roughly 500 kilometers, putting much of Ukraine and parts of Moldova, Poland, Romania and Lithuania at risk.
  • Ukrainian officials publicized seized Starlink hardware and a ministerial adviser cited suspected Starlink-enabled drones in a Jan. 27 Kharkiv train attack, though authorities have not published technical details of mitigations.
  • Ukraine’s military and civilian sectors rely heavily on Starlink for communications, making broad regional shutdowns a problematic option for limiting misuse.
  • Ukrainian intelligence says Russian units obtained terminals through unofficial third-country channels, while Musk notes Starlink terms prohibit offensive use as reports describe hundreds of modified drones in service.
