Ukraine Says Russia Violated Kyiv’s Ceasefire Minutes After It Began

The swift breach shows holiday truces keep collapsing under mass drone and missile attacks.

Overview

  • Ukraine, which started its unilateral truce at midnight Wednesday, said Russia struck overnight with more than 100 drones and several missiles.
  • Following Tuesday’s barrages that killed at least 27 people, officials cited 12 dead in Zaporizhzhia, six in Kramatorsk, four in Dnipro, and five at a gas site in Poltava.
  • By 10 a.m., President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces had committed 1,820 ceasefire violations and warned Ukraine would respond in kind if strikes continue.
  • Moscow has announced a separate May 8–9 pause tied to its Victory Day events and has scaled back its parade and mobile internet in the capital over drone threats.
  • Cross-border strikes extended the fight beyond the front lines as Ukraine hit targets deep inside Russia’s Chuvashia, where local officials reported two deaths, and Russian-installed authorities in Crimea said five were killed in Dzhankoi.
