Ukraine Sanctions 10 Russian Athletes Over Backing of War

The measures follow a petition by skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych.

Overview

  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Feb. 16 signed a decree enacting an NSDC decision imposing personal restrictive measures on the athletes.
  • The published appendix names Evgenii Baidusov, Imam Ganishov, Svetlana Dashanimayeva, Arkady Dvorkovich, Yana Yegoryan, Vladislav Larin, Maksim Khramtsov, Angelina Melnikova, Madina Taimazova, and Fedor Chudinov.
  • Kyiv cites visits to occupied Ukrainian territories, public justification of the invasion, fundraising for occupying forces, and events involving abducted Ukrainian children as grounds for the sanctions.
  • Zelenskyy said the action is meant to signal that support for aggression will not be ignored and vowed to restore justice.
  • The package stems from Heraskevych’s petition, following his Olympic disqualification after the IOC banned his planned “helmet of remembrance,” for which he later received the Order of Freedom.
