Ukraine Reburies OUN Leader Andriy Melnyk and His Wife at National Military Cemetery

The ceremony signals the start of a state-led effort to bring home thousands of Ukrainians buried abroad.

  • The reburial was held Monday at the National Military Memorial Cemetery in the Kyiv region with President Volodymyr Zelensky and senior officials present.
  • Melnyk and his wife were exhumed in Luxembourg on May 19 and their remains were returned to Ukraine on May 21 before public funeral services in Kyiv from May 22–24.
  • Deputy head of the President’s Office Irina Vereshchuk said the government is drafting a law to create a Panтеон героїв that will set legal criteria and procedures for state reburials.
  • The Ukrainian Institute of National Memory is compiling records and has identified more than 11,000 Ukrainians buried abroad to prioritize future repatriations and manage the logistics of returns.
  • Officials said the campaign continues the longer project of restoring national memory started by earlier leaders and that permission is already secured to repatriate OUN founder Yevhen Konovalets next.
