Ukraine Launches Two‑Year Trial of Fixed‑Term Military Contracts

The reform reallocates pay toward frontline roles while guaranteeing discharge at contract end and creating set mobilization deferrals.

Overview

  • The Cabinet published the resolution and from Monday, June 15, 2026 new infantry-assault, combat and basic contracts of 6–24 months can be signed under a two-year experimental project running to June 2028.
  • Contract lengths are specified by role: combat posts for current servicemembers are 10 months, reservists 14 months (or from 6 months for reservists with combat experience), and other posts 24 months.
  • After a contract ends, servicemembers are guaranteed discharge and a baseline six-month deferral from mobilization with additional deferral months awarded for days in combat and years of service.
  • The Ministry of Defense said funds were shifted to reward front-line service with a raised base pay to 30,000 UAH, average frontline pay cited near 300,000 UAH, daily assault supplements and tiered mission payouts up to 170,000 UAH.
  • The reform includes wounded-compensation rules that keep combat pay at 100,000 UAH per month for up to 12 months of inpatient treatment and announces phased dismissals starting by year-end that will prioritize longest-serving and most combat-exposed personnel.
