Ukraine Intensifies Long‑Range Drone Campaign and Damages Moscow Oil Refinery

The strikes are meant to reduce Russia’s fuel output by targeting refineries and supply links through concentrated drone waves.

Overview

  • A sustained series of massed drone attacks between June 18 and June 20 struck Moscow’s Kapotnya oil refinery and other energy targets, producing large fires and forcing the refinery to suspend oil processing, Ukrainian military sources said.
  • Ukraine’s president confirmed a separate strike on a Tyumen refinery in western Siberia and said Kyiv has deployed upgraded long‑range drones with a range of more than 3,000 km.
  • Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces reported attacks on Crimea’s energy and logistics nodes, including the Hlibivka underground gas storage site and the Tavriiska thermal plant, while Zaporozhye NPP’s transport department reported at least 14 drone strikes that caused fires but no injuries.
  • Russia kept up heavy missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, with confirmed civilian deaths and injuries in Kharkiv and Sumy and both sides reporting large numbers of interceptions that are difficult to independently verify.
  • Analysts say Ukraine’s tactic of sending large drone waves is straining and sometimes overwhelming Russian air defenses, a trend that could progressively degrade Russian refining and supply capacity and raise escalation and nuclear‑safety concerns as Russian officials issue bellicose rhetoric.
