Ukraine Downs Waves of Drones as Moscow Tower Hit in Rare Strike

The surge in cross-border strikes signals an effort to overload air defenses ahead of Victory Day.

Overview

  • Ukraine’s Air Force, which reported Monday that it neutralized 135 of 155 drones launched since Sunday evening, said several strikes still got through in 10 locations.
  • Following Monday’s daytime attack, the Air Force said Russia launched one Iskander-M ballistic missile and 88 strike drones and that air defenses downed or jammed 70 of them.
  • The Kharkiv region town of Merefa, which was hit Monday morning in what prosecutors said was an Iskander strike, saw its death toll rise to six with 31 injured according to regional authorities.
  • Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that a drone hit a high-rise on Mosfilmovskaya Street early Monday with no casualties, as Russia’s Defense Ministry said it shot down scores of Ukrainian drones over multiple regions.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine recently struck Russian oil tankers and naval vessels at Primorsk and near Novorossiysk, in a campaign that Kyiv argues limits revenue while Russia uses large swarms, decoys, and faster Shahed-type drones to drain Ukrainian defenses.
