Ukraine Detains Two More Suspected Russian Agents as SSU Foils Targeted Strike Plot

Security officials say preemptive counterintelligence thwarted planned strikes.

Overview

  • SSU counterintelligence detained two residents of Dnipropetrovsk region accused of directing missile and drone attacks on Dnipro and Kryvyi Rih under a single Russian handler.
  • Investigators say one suspect, a metallurgical plant employee, scouted concentrations of personnel and equipment and tracked convoys, while a draft dodger adjusted strikes from his apartment.
  • Both men were reportedly recruited via pro-Kremlin Telegram chats, detained at their homes with phones seized, and held without bail on treason charges under Article 111(2) carrying potential life sentences.
  • A day earlier, SSU detained a Ukrainian drone operator recruited through his ex-wife in occupied Zaporizhzhia to help target 3rd Army Corps commander Andrii Biletskyi, documenting Google Maps coordinates and commander movements before arrest on a garrison; SSU says it exposed him early and secured Defense Forces locations.
  • On March 12, SSU detained a Russian citizen with a Ukrainian residence permit who posed as a welder while mapping air defenses and airfields for the GRU using Google Maps; he was charged under Article 114-2 and faces up to 12 years.
