Ukraine Approves Program to Send Demilitarized Russian Tanks to European Museums

Kyiv says the transfers will show physical evidence of Russian aggression to foreign publics and help sustain partner support.

Overview

  • The Cabinet of Ministers approved the mechanism in mid-August 2026 to allow selected destroyed or captured Russian military equipment to be transferred abroad for museum display.
  • The Ministry of Defence identified captured T‑72 tanks as the first items and named museums in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark and the Netherlands as recipients.
  • Officials say every vehicle will be rendered inoperable and stripped of explosive components so it can be exported and shown safely and free of charge.
  • The program was developed by the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Culture and is presented as a form of cultural diplomacy to document the war and keep international attention focused on Ukraine’s struggle.
  • The initiative builds on Ukraine’s TrophyLab program by moving some captured materiel from technical study into public exhibition, which could deepen public understanding abroad and reinforce political support for Kyiv.
