UKHSA Renews Warning on Four Wet Wipe Brands Linked to Burkholderia Outbreak

Investigators say products withdrawn in 2025 may still be in homes, posing ongoing risk to vulnerable patients.

Overview

  • UKHSA and MHRA are instructing the public to stop using and dispose of specified non-sterile, alcohol-free wipes immediately.
  • The four named products are ValueAid Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes, Microsafe Moist Wipe Alcohol Free, Steroplast Sterowipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes, and Reliwipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes.
  • An Eurosurveillance analysis and UKHSA data report 59 confirmed cases since 2018 and six deaths, with a small number of recent cases still identified.
  • The MHRA issued retailer notices in July 2025 that led to the wipes being withdrawn from sale, yet officials warn they may remain in first-aid kits and households.
  • Officials advise that non-sterile alcohol-free wipes should not be used on wounds or to clean intravenous lines, note the greatest risk for immunocompromised people or those with home IV lines, and report three brands trace to one UK manufacturing site.
