UKHSA Renews Call for Shingles Jabs After Uptake Lags in Newly Eligible Older Adults

New UKHSA figures show early uptake lags despite a year-round offer.

Overview

  • Official data to October 2025 shows 42.1% of those turning 66 and 53.5% of those turning 71 received a first Shingrix dose in their first year of eligibility.
  • UKHSA and NHS leaders urged eligible people to book appointments when invited and to complete the two-dose course.
  • The Shingrix For All programme launched on 1 September 2023 and offers two doses to people turning 65 or 70, with eligibility extended to severely immunosuppressed adults aged 18 and over.
  • Adults aged 70 to 80 who missed earlier offers are encouraged to catch up, with booking available via GP practices or through NHS.uk.
  • Shingles results from reactivation of the chickenpox virus and can cause severe pain and long-term nerve complications, with two Shingrix doses described as highly effective.
