UK Supermarkets Slash Christmas Veg to 5p as Price War Intensifies

Discounts are concentrated on loyalty members with rationing per shopper, with retailers insisting farmer payments are unchanged.

  • Lidl’s festive veg has been reduced to 5p at many stores through December 24, typically with a three-per-pack guidance, after initially flagging 8p deals.
  • Tesco and Sainsbury’s are offering selected vegetables for 15p to Clubcard and Nectar members respectively, generally running from December 18 through Christmas Eve or Day depending on the retailer.
  • Retailers say the promotions were agreed with growers and do not cut farmgate prices, while the NFU warns such steep discounts can distort perceptions of the value of British produce; Asda had not announced a comparable veg offer at the time of reporting.
