UK Sandwich Study Finds Widespread Excess Salt, Renewing Calls for Mandatory Limits

The findings add pressure on ministers to set legal salt limits after years of weak voluntary targets.

Overview

  • Action on Salt & Sugar analyzed 546 sandwiches, wraps and baguettes and found one in ten exceed salt and calorie health targets.
  • Almost half would carry a red high-salt warning on the front of pack, and 32 deliver at least half of a day’s salt limit in one serving.
  • The saltiest item was Gail’s Smoked Chicken Caesar Club at 6.88g of salt, which tops the 6g daily limit and nears five McDonald’s cheeseburgers.
  • High-street sandwiches were saltier than supermarket lines, with Asda and Lidl meeting targets and Starbucks and Greggs posting the lowest out-of-home averages.
  • Lower-salt recipes show reformulation is feasible, with Subway’s Veggie Delite at 0.60g of salt and Pret’s Avo, Olive & Toms half baguette at 0.82g.
