UK Regulator Warns Patients Over Fake 15mg Mounjaro Pens Linked to Birmingham Clinic

Regulators warn the counterfeit 15mg pens may be non-sterile despite containing tirzepatide, posing infection or allergic risks.

Overview

  • The MHRA is contacting certain patients who may have received counterfeit Mounjaro KwikPen 15mg injections dispensed by The Private Pharmacy Clinic in Birmingham.
  • All identified fakes are labeled 15mg with batch number D873576, which is a legitimate code for genuine 7.5mg pens that are not affected.
  • Laboratory testing confirmed the presence of tirzepatide, but sterility cannot be assured, so patients are advised to stop using affected pens, keep them safe, and report via info@mhra.gov.uk or the Yellow Card scheme.
  • The issue was detected after pen failures, primarily dose knobs detaching during use, with Eli Lilly notifying regulators following five reports.
  • The General Pharmaceutical Council has imposed conditions on the pharmacy, and the MHRA says no patients have required treatment as its investigation and clinical guidance continue.
