Overview
- The UK told the UN Security Council on 22 May that it welcomed the conclusion of the confirmation of charges hearing for Khaled Mohamed Ali El Hishri and called the proceedings an important moment for victims.
- El Hishri was arrested and surrendered to the ICC late last year and faces 17 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity linked mainly to abuses at Mitiga Prison.
- The UK highlighted that ICC prosecutors are working with national authorities and noted that information from the ICC helped Dutch domestic proceedings on alleged human trafficking.
- The UK expressed regret that the ICC’s Deputy Prosecutor could not brief the Council in person because a US visa was not issued and stressed that it opposes sanctions on ICC staff or organisations.
- The ICC’s Libya Unified Team is collecting evidence in multiple locations under UN resolution 1970, a process the UK said could advance accountability and, if paired with Libyan cooperation, help stabilise the country.
