UK Raises Social Care Minimum Income by 7% From April, Confirms £723m for Home Adaptations

Ministers cast the measures as early progress toward a National Care Service to reform adult social care.

Overview

  • More than 150,000 working-age adults receiving community social care will keep at least £400 extra a year after charges are assessed.
  • People eligible for the disability premium will retain up to £510 more annually under the uprating.
  • The 7% rise is described by the government as the largest above-inflation increase to the working-age Minimum Income Guarantee in over a decade.
  • A £723 million Disabled Facilities Grant allocation next year will fund adaptations such as stairlifts, ramps and accessible bathrooms to support independent living and reduce hospital demand.
  • From April, the Personal Expenses Allowance and the Minimum Income Guarantee for over-65s will rise by 3.8%, alongside reform steps including an Independent Commission led by Baroness Louise Casey and funding toward a Fair Pay Agreement for care workers.
