UK Police Arrest Peter Mandelson in Epstein Inquiry, Release Him on Bail

Downing Street plans an early March release of records on Mandelson’s ambassadorial appointment.

Overview

  • The Metropolitan Police detained the 72-year-old on 23 February on suspicion of misconduct in public office and released him on bail after several hours of questioning.
  • The criminal probe was launched after U.S. Department of Justice files published in late January alleged he shared market-sensitive information with Jeffrey Epstein, including during his 2008–2010 ministerial tenure.
  • Officers searched Mandelson’s residences in Camden, London, and in Wiltshire in early February as part of the investigation.
  • Epstein documents also reference $75,000 in transfers to accounts linked to Mandelson in 2003–2004 and frequent communications around 2010; a spokesperson has said he has no record or memory of the payments and expressed regret over ties to Epstein.
  • Political fallout is mounting as the government prepares to publish related papers with security filtering in early March, and ministers backed releasing files on Prince Andrew’s 2001 trade envoy appointment following his separate arrest last week.
