UK Pet Experts Renew Warning on Dangerous Christmas Foods for Dogs

Veterinary guidance warns that several festive ingredients can trigger life‑threatening reactions in dogs.

Overview

  • Dog trainer Paul Haylock’s TikTok lists eight hazards seen at Christmas, urging owners to keep dogs away from chocolate, mince pies and dried fruits, blue cheese, grapes, xylitol, avocado, garlic and onions.
  • Chocolate poses a dose‑dependent risk due to theobromine, with cocoa powder and baker’s chocolate most dangerous, causing vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures or death in severe cases.
  • Grapes, raisins, sultanas and currants can cause acute kidney failure even in small amounts, and Vets Now advises calling a vet immediately if a dog eats mince pies that may also contain xylitol or chocolate.
  • Xylitol in sugar‑free sweets and bakes can trigger rapid hypoglycaemia and potential liver failure, with symptoms such as vomiting, weakness or seizures sometimes appearing within about 30 minutes.
  • A second expert adds further cautions for the season, warning against cooked bones, fatty meats and salty gravies, suggesting lean turkey or chicken and simple homemade pet treats with no xylitol as safer options.
