UK Orders Recall of Three Sand-Filled Toys Over Asbestos Risk

The case highlights a blind spot in toy safety rules on asbestos testing.

Overview

  • The Office for Product Safety and Standards, which issued recall notices Thursday, said three stretchy toys pose a health risk because their sand filling may contain asbestos.
  • The recalled items are the HGL Stretchy Sand Monster Truck, Scrunchems Stretchies Sleepy Dino, and HGL Stretchy Sand Pig, all made in China and distributed in the UK by One For Fun Limited.
  • Owners are told to stop use at once, keep the toys away from children, double-bag intact items, and if sand is exposed clean with wet cloths while wearing gloves and a mask before sealing all waste.
  • One For Fun said it ran independent tests across its sand-filled range, found trace contamination in the three products, withdrew them from sale, and has stopped using sand as a filler.
  • Asbestos is a banned substance linked to cancers such as mesothelioma, and consumer group Which? urged tighter checks and a review of standards, noting EN71 does not require asbestos testing.
