UK on Track for Warmest Year on Record, Met Office Says

Provisional data puts the annual mean slightly above 2022’s record, with a final determination expected in early January.

Overview

  • Met Office tracking shows a 2025 UK mean temperature near 10.05°C in late December, edging past 2022’s 10.03°C.
  • Forecasters say it is “more likely than not” that 2025 will finish as the warmest year, though a Christmas–New Year cold spell could still affect the final value.
  • If confirmed, 2025 would be only the second year with a UK annual mean above 10°C and would place four of the past five years in the top five since records began in 1884.
  • 2025 also brought the warmest summer on record at 16.10°C and the sunniest year with 1,622 hours to 15 December, alongside four heatwaves and drought impacts.
  • Scientists cite about 1.0°C of UK warming over four decades as evidence of rapid climate change, with official 2025 figures due on Jan 2.
