UK Hikes First-Year Car Tax to £5,690 for 59 High-Emission Models From April 1

Ministers say widening the initial charge is intended to steer buyers toward electric vehicles.

Overview

  • The top first-year VED band for cars emitting over 255 g/km rises to £5,690 on April 1, 2026, with the standard annual rate moving to £200.
  • A published government list identifies 59 affected new models across 24 manufacturers, largely covering big SUVs, performance cars and pickups.
  • Zero‑emission cars keep a £10 first‑year rate under current plans, and the £425 Expensive Car Supplement stays in place with the EV threshold lifted to £50,000.
  • From April 2028, a new eVED pay‑per‑mile charge will apply at 3p for EVs and 1.5p for plug‑in hybrids, with the collection mechanism yet to be detailed.
  • The RAC and industry groups warn the measures could add roughly £240 a year for an 8,000‑mile EV driver and risk weakening demand and used values.
