UK Gardeners Urged to Aerate Lawns Now for Healthier Summer Grass

Major gardening advice backs doing it in moist soil one to two days after rain.

Overview

  • UK outlets, which published pieces Thursday, amplified TikTok gardener Michael Griffiths’ call to aerate lawns this spring.
  • Aeration punches holes so air, water and nutrients reach roots, which eases compacted soil and helps grass grow deeper roots that cope better with drought and disease.
  • The suggested low-cost method uses a garden fork to make 4–5 inch holes about every six inches, pushing in and pulling back slightly without lifting the fork out.
  • B&Q advises doing the work one to two days after rain when soil is moist and says to avoid waterlogged ground, while the RHS recommends applying fertiliser before forecast rain and coverage warns synthetic feeds can carry environmental costs.
  • Spring scarifying, which strips the dense thatch layer with blades or tines, is also recommended to improve drainage and nutrient flow ahead of summer.
