UK Expands Recalls of Sand-Filled Children’s Toys Over Asbestos Risk

Officials warn the sand in affected kits may contain asbestos, posing a health risk even at low exposure.

Overview

  • The Office for Product Safety and Standards ordered a recall of the Colour Day Sand Art Activity Kit sold on Amazon and eBay, with listings removed after the kit’s sand was judged a potential asbestos risk.
  • OPSS also flagged and recalled the Kids Create Sand Art Kit from IG Design Group UK Limited, barcode 5012128618222 and model YKICACA4A016, sold between January 2025 and February 2026.
  • HTI Toys’ Stretcherz Stretch and Slammerz ranges have been withdrawn or recalled by major retailers including Asda, Aldi, Argos, Tesco, Smyths, The Works and TK Maxx/Homesense, with TK Maxx citing trace asbestos in the sand-like filling.
  • Addo Play Limited’s Out To Impress Sand Art Creations was recalled, with the product sold by The Entertainer, Tesco, Matalan and Marks & Spencer between August 2023 and February 2026 under item code 318-19149-B.
  • Authorities instruct owners to stop use immediately, double-bag unopened sand, wet-clean used areas while wearing gloves and a mask, and seek refunds, noting the products breach Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 and that retailers report no injuries to date.
