UK Drops Plans for New Destroyers to Buy Drone Command Ships

Ministers say the change will expand naval reach through uncrewed systems to counter rising submarine threats.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Defence has confirmed procurement of at least six British-built Common Combat Vessels to act as command hubs for uncrewed air, surface and underwater systems with delivery expected in the early 2030s.
  • Reports say planned replacement programmes for up to eight Type 83 destroyers and five Type 32 frigates have been removed from the Defence Investment Plan, a move that ends earlier concepts for high-end guided-missile escorts.
  • Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis is reported to have won roughly £1 billion more from the Treasury, taking the Dip settlement to about £14.5–15 billion after John Healey resigned over a smaller offer.
  • The plan includes roughly £500 million for the UK Commando Force to buy high-speed insertion craft, strike drones and other autonomous kit aimed at operations in the North Atlantic and High North.
  • Military leaders and industry warn the reprioritisation could leave gaps in long-range air defence and shipbuilding work, and allies are watching the Dip’s publication, which is expected imminently before the NATO summit on 7 July.
