Overview
- Collections that fall on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day are moving to nearby days, commonly the following weekend, with published timetables from Manchester, Wirral, London boroughs and councils across the North East and North Yorkshire.
- Many areas are pausing brown or garden waste services over the festive period to prioritise residual and recycling rounds, with examples including Bury (Dec 22–Jan 4), Wirral (Dec 22–Jan 16) and Wiltshire (two-week pause).
- Household recycling centres are closed on Dec 25, Dec 26 and Jan 1, with some sites operating reduced hours on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and specific regional guidance such as van booking rules in Merseyside and set opening windows in Wiltshire.
- Free real Christmas tree collections start in early January in numerous councils with preparation rules such as removing decorations, observing size limits around six feet and cutting larger trees, alongside estate or flat-specific arrangements, drop-off points and charity pickup options.
- Councils advise putting bins out early (often by 5–7am), ensuring lids are closed and side waste is not taken in many areas, though a few councils permit limited extra bags on the first collection after Christmas.
