UK Coroner Rules Lucy Harrison’s Death Unlawful Killing, Names Father as Shooter

The finding contrasts with a Texas grand jury’s decision last year not to bring charges.

Overview

  • Senior coroner Jacqueline Devonish concluded the 23-year-old was unlawfully killed through gross negligence manslaughter, calling the father’s actions reckless for pointing a gun at chest height and pulling the trigger.
  • Kris Harrison admitted drinking about 500ml of wine that day and the coroner said he misled police about his alcohol use, while Prosper officers suspected drinking but did not test him at the scene.
  • Inquest records stated Lucy was shot in the chest from medium range and had no alcohol or drugs in her system, with police and medical findings noting a wound to the heart.
  • Boyfriend Sam Littler testified there was a big argument about Donald Trump earlier in the day, that Harrison led Lucy into a bedroom, and that a gunshot sounded about 15 seconds later as the father later claimed the weapon “went off.”
  • Lucy’s mother, Jane Coates, welcomed the ruling and said her daughter was failed by Texas gun laws and police decisions, noting the Glock 9mm was kept for home defense in a state where no licence is required for that purpose.
