UK Airports Split on 100ml Liquid Rule as CT Scanners Roll Out

Passengers should check each airport’s rules before they fly.

Overview

  • Several major hubs including Heathrow, Gatwick, Edinburgh and Belfast International now allow larger liquid containers in hand luggage after installing 3D CT scanners.
  • Many airports such as Aberdeen, Glasgow, Glasgow Prestwick, Inverness, Liverpool John Lennon and Newcastle still enforce the 100ml limit at security.
  • The new scanners produce detailed 3D images that let staff screen bags without passengers removing liquids or laptops, which can speed queues during busy periods.
  • Industry adviser Neil Atkinson said the upgrades make security smoother but warned that mixed rules can catch people out if they do not check ahead.
  • Travellers risk delays or having items taken if they assume uniform rules, and some return flights from overseas may face stricter limits at departure airports.
