UFS Study Detects Hormone-Disrupting Chemicals in Pads and Pantyliners Sold in South Africa

Researchers say repeated use over years raises safety concerns due to mucosal absorption.

Overview

  • The peer-reviewed UFS analysis tested 16 sanitary pad brands and eight pantyliner types purchased from South African retailers.
  • Bisphenols were found in all pads and 75% of liners, parabens in over 81% of pads and 75% of liners, and phthalates in all liners and 50% of pads.
  • Every product contained at least two endocrine-disrupting chemicals, indicating widespread contamination across the sample.
  • Researchers warn that long-term use on mucosal tissue can increase absorption, with prior studies linking these chemicals to hormonal imbalance, fertility issues, endometriosis and some cancers.
  • South Africa lacks specific standards for these chemicals and does not require full ingredient disclosure, while advocates urge SAHR, SABS and DWYPD to respond and brand identities remain undisclosed.
