UDP Names Senior Lawyer Vivan G.K. Kynta as Shillong Bypoll Candidate

The UDP officially announced Vivan G.K. Kynta as its candidate on Thursday, May 28, opening the contest after the February vacancy caused by MP Ricky A. J. Syngkon's death.
Kynta is a senior advocate with nearly three decades as KHADC standing counsel and a record in constitutional litigation, tribal rights and Sixth Schedule matters.
In his first interviews as nominee, Kynta urged use of Khasi in courts and backed Khasi’s inclusion in the Constitution’s Eighth Schedule to improve rural litigants’ ability to understand proceedings.
The party announcement drew notable absences by senior UDP figures and public complaints from local leaders about poor consultation, raising questions about party unity ahead of campaigning.
The seat looks set for a multi‑cornered fight with Congress, NPP and VPP candidates already named and the BJP likely to field a nominee, and the language push could force legal and legislative debate given the state ordinance on Khasi and Garo has six‑month validity pending a bill.
