UCD Assistant Professor Charged With 148 Offences Over Alleged Student Data Access

The charges stem from a GNCCB probe launched after a 2023 complaint, with forensic analysis of seized devices leading to today’s court appearance.

Overview

  • Dr Stephen Davis, a 53-year-old archaeology lecturer, appeared at Dublin District Court charged with harassment and unlawful access to student information systems.
  • He faces 96 counts under the Criminal Justice (Offences Relating to Information Systems) Act 2017, 51 counts of harassment, and one count alleging use of software to connect with others’ data.
  • Detective evidence stated software was used to steal UCD student passwords, access accounts, and download personal material affecting over 100 identified victims.
  • Bail was granted on a €100 bond with conditions including passport surrender, twice-weekly sign-ons at Bray Garda Station, no contact with victims, and a stay-away order for Ballywaltrim Library in Bray.
  • The Director of Public Prosecutions directed trial on indictment, victim identities are protected, and Davis was remanded to reappear on 24 July as GNCCB engagement with victims and UCD continues.
