UC San Diego’s CHARM Ring Uses Finger Sweat to Track Glucose and Other Biomarkers

Prototype readings suggest the approach could enable noninvasive glucose monitoring to inform insulin dosing.

  • Researchers at the University of California San Diego published a peer reviewed paper describing CHARM, a research prototype ring that pulls sweat from the finger with an osmotic hydrogel and measures chemical markers with electrochemical sensors.
  • The device can detect six biomarkers and monitor up to four at once, including glucose, ketones, lactate, vitamin C, uric acid, and alcohol.
  • Early trials with people with and without Type 1 diabetes showed CHARM’s sweat glucose readings closely matched commercial continuous glucose monitors and its ketone readings aligned with blood ketone meters.
  • CHARM remains a bulky lab prototype with about 12 hours of battery life, a clamp and gel design that affects comfort, and a need for improved hydrogel and multi‑day sampling before practical use.
