UC San Diego Health and West Health Launch $40 Million Accelerator to Redesign Care

Overview

• UC San Diego Health and West Health announced the West Health Accelerator with $40 million committed over six years to build a new model of coordinated care.
• The program, announced on Aug. 12, 2026, named Theodore “Ted” Chan as inaugural executive director and will begin work across UC San Diego Health’s three hospitals and clinic network.
• Core technical efforts include expanding a 24/7 'mission control' coordination hub, deploying virtual care platforms, integrating electronic health record and other data, and piloting wearable monitoring tools.
• Leaders say the Accelerator aims to let more patients receive the right care at the right time and place, including more care at home, to help meet demand as the 65-and-older population grows.
• The initiative builds on a decade of UC San Diego–West Health collaboration that created the Gary and Mary West Emergency Department and helped San Diego hospitals earn geriatric emergency accreditation, with plans to package successful practices for other systems nationally.
