UAE Says Barakah Drone Attack Came From Iraq After Fire at Nuclear Plant

IAEA warnings spotlight the danger of any military activity near nuclear plants.

Overview

  • Abu Dhabi authorities said a drone hit an external electrical generator at the Barakah plant on Sunday, causing a contained fire with no injuries or radiological release.
  • The defense ministry now says technical tracking shows all three drones, including two it intercepted, were launched from Iraqi territory and that the probe is still under way.
  • The IAEA said it is in constant contact with the UAE, reported emergency diesel power to unit 3, and warned that any military activity near reactors is unacceptable.
  • UAE officials condemned the strike as a terrorist act and opened diplomatic outreach, while the UN and governments including India voiced concern and urged restraint.
  • This was the first attack on the Arab world’s only operating nuclear plant, which supplies about a quarter of the UAE’s electricity, and it raises pressure on a shaky U.S.–Iran ceasefire and on energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
