Overview
- Typhoon No.15 is approaching from the east and is forecast to be nearest to Tohoku and Kanto on Tuesday, August 11, with the possibility of landfall that afternoon or evening.
- The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued warnings for heavy to record rain, landslides and river flooding and cautioned about very strong gusts and high waves across eastern and central Japan.
- Forecasts show 24‑hour rainfall totals of up to about 150–180 millimetres in parts of Tohoku and maximum instantaneous gusts near 30–35 m/s in exposed areas, with the storm’s strong‑wind field extending hundreds of kilometres from the centre.
- Operational impacts are already occurring: Sendai Airport has canceled dozens of flights and local governments such as Kurihara City have issued evacuation orders for vulnerable residents.
- After passing near or over Tohoku and Kanto, the typhoon is expected to turn west and cross Honshu into the Japan Sea by August 12, then weaken to a tropical depression around August 13, a path that could widen heavy‑rain and ripple effects into central and western regions during the busy Obon travel period.
