Two Workers Killed in Everett Barge Crane Collapse at Former Exxon Site

Investigators are working to determine why a barge-mounted crane failed at Everett’s former Exxon terminal.

Overview

  • Authorities said one worker died at the scene and another was pronounced dead at a hospital after the crane toppled on the Mystic River waterfront.
  • Police said one victim had to be extracted from the downed crane, and fire officials reported no other missing or injured workers.
  • Crews had been dismantling the former Exxon/ExxonMobil fuel terminal from a barge when the crane collapsed, according to the fire chief.
  • Massachusetts State Police, the Everett Police Department, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are leading the investigation, with OSHA notified and the Middlesex District Attorney’s office involved.
  • Everett Landco paused barge operations at the site, Charter Contracting said the victims worked for a subcontractor, and the Pile Drivers & Divers Local 56 confirmed both were union members as the mayor said a cable snapped during pipe-cutting work.
