Two Wolves Die in Separate Road Collisions in Schleswig-Holstein

Officials describe the crashes as isolated incidents tied to wolves crossing busy roads.

Overview

  • On Friday a young male wolf was struck on the B206 in Kreis Segeberg and was euthanized on site by a Wolfsmanagement employee using a firearm, according to the LfU.
  • A second wolf, a female likely in her second year, was found dead on the A1 near the Barsbüttel exit in the direction of Hamburg.
  • Both carcasses have been transferred to the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin for necropsy to assess health status and origin.
  • State monitoring teams note that several packs and roaming individuals now use the region, increasing the chance of road crossings that pose a major danger.
  • Coordinator Jens Matzen said the two crashes show no pattern and were bad luck, while experts advise drivers to be especially alert in known wolf areas at dusk.
