Two Tiger Deaths in MP and Karnataka Trigger Investigations Into Fight, Suspected Snare

Activists question whether collar alerts were acted on promptly in the Madhya Pradesh case.

Overview

  • Forest officials in Madhya Pradesh say a radio-collared tiger found dead on February 15 in Rani Durgavati Tiger Reserve likely died in a territorial fight, with pugmarks and injury signs reported at the site.
  • MP’s Additional PCCF (Wildlife) said the carcass showed severe head trauma and confirmed this was the state’s tenth tiger death since January 1, with the final post-mortem report pending under NTCA protocols.
  • Wildlife activist Ajay Dubey alleges satellite-collar data showed the tiger stationary for an extended period without timely field verification and has sought an independent NTCA inquiry and disciplinary action.
  • In Karnataka, a 5–6-year-old male tiger was found dead near the Gundal reservoir in BRT Tiger Reserve, where officials suspect a snare trap led to the death and have registered a wildlife offence case.
  • Both sites were processed under NTCA Standard Operating Procedures, police were notified in the Karnataka case, and officials in MP say there are no immediate signs of poaching in the Rani Durgavati incident.
