Two Teens Missing in Surf off South Africa as Separate Cliff-Fall Death Reported

Multi-agency teams continue coastal searches in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape as officials caution beachgoers about strong currents and shifting surf.

  • At Umdloti Main Beach north of Durban, a 17-year-old went missing after three bathers encountered difficulty, with two others, aged 18 and 19, rescued.
  • NSRI Durban launched The Victor Daitz and NSRI Ballito deployed Rescue 41 Alpha while lifeguards conducted free-dive and shoreline searches with SAPS and Metro Police units.
  • At Hole-in-the-Wall in the Eastern Cape, a 13-year-old from Mthatha disappeared in the surf and extensive sea and shoreline searches have not found him.
  • SAPS Water Policing and Diving Services, Police K9 teams, and occasional helicopter support are assisting ongoing operations alongside NSRI and provincial EMS.
  • In a separate incident at Nature’s Valley, a 16-year-old who fell from a cliff was located unresponsive in a sea cave and declared deceased, with an inquest opened.
